Timeline of Lorde’s Rise to Artist of the Year Nominee Status

Lorde has a lot to be proud of at the American Music Awards this year. She’s nominated for Artist of the Year and she’s performing. Plus, she’s nominated for three other awardsFavorite Female Pop/Rock ArtistFavorite Pop/Rock Album and Favorite Alternative Rock Artist. Here’s a look at Lorde’s rise to fame and Artist of the Year nominee status.

2009: Lorde was signed to Universal Music Group for development.

November 2012: Lorde self-released The Love Club EP for free on Soundcloud and said she felt like she “conquered the world” after it received its first 10,000 plays.

March 2013: Since The Love Club EP was so well received, Universal Music Group released it.

June 2013: “Royals” was released as a single. It peaked at the top of the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and stayed there for nine consecutive weeks, making Lorde the youngest solo artist to achieve a No. 1 single in the US since Tiffany with “Could’ve Been” in 1988.

September 2013: Lorde released her debut album Pure Heroine. It reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200 Chart in the US and No. 1 in Australia and New Zealand, as well as several other countries.

November 2013: Named one of TIME‘s “16 Most Influential Teens of 2013.”

January 2014: Placed on Forbes‘ “30 Under 30” list.

February 2014:  Lorde won two GRAMMYs for Best Pop Solo Performance and Song of the Year.

May 2014: Won two Billboard Music Awards for Top New Artist and Top Rock Song.
