The 2014 American Music Award nominations have been announced! So who’s at the front of the pack this year? Iggy Azalea leads with six nominations, which is quite impressive considering she’s never been nominated for an AMA before. She’s also up for the night’s biggest honor: Artist of the Year.
Not only is I-G-G-Y nominated for Artist of the Year, but she’s also nominated for New Artist of the Year. Last year, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were also nominated for both Artist of the Year and New Artist of the Year. Additionally, Justin Bieber was nominated for both major honors and won both categories in 2010.
Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams and John Legend follow with five nominations each, and Lorde with four. Katy has been nominated for nine AMAs and has won two, while John has previously been nominated for six AMAs. However, these are the first nominations for both Pharrell and Lorde. Other first time nominees include Sam Smith, Meghan Trainor, MAGIC!, 5 Seconds of Summer, Kacey Musgraves and Bastille, among others.
Additionally, Beyonce, Eminem, Imagine Dragons, One Direction and OneRepublic each earned three nominations. Beyonce and Eminem are both AMA power houses. Queen B has won nine AMAs and been nominated for 25 for her work both with Destiny’s Child and as solo artist, while Eminem has won eight AMAs and been nominated for 23.
As far as the other artists with three nominations this year, Imagine Dragons has previously won one AMA, but been nominated for a total of six awards. One Direction has won two and been nominated for eight, and OneRepublic has been nominated for four awards.
Michael Jackson holds the record for most AMAs won by a single artist. He recieved a total of 26 awards during his lifetime, including one for Artist of the Century. Yes, the CENTURY. Not just the year. (That’s a big deal.) Alabama holds the record for most AMAs won by a group with 23 awards and Whitney Houston holds the record for most AMAs won by a female artist with 22 awards.
While Taylor Swift didn’t add any AMAs nominations to her list this year, she also has a good track record at the AMAs, with 15 wins and 18 nominations. (That’s a pretty good success rate, we’d say.)
